Abby
was born in Louisiana, just between New Orleans and Baton
Rouge. She was inspired and supported by a loving,
creative family to study dance through most of her childhood
and into her teenage years. At 16, Abby began teaching
dance to kids and continued into the college years.
While studying philosophy at the University of South
Alabama, Abby was introduced to ancient yogic scriptures
and Buddhist
principles. After moving to Los Angeles in 1995, she
took her first formal Yoga class and knew that she had found
what she had always been looking for.
Abby continued to study and practice at Center for Yoga,
Sivananda Vedanta and Ahimsa Yoga. At age 22, she travelled
to India
where she earned a teaching certificate through Sivananda
Yoga Vedanta under the auspice of Swami Mahadevananda
and Swami
Atma. She also recieved training at YogaWorks in 1999
with Maty Ezraty and Lisa Walford. She soon joined their teaching
roster. Abby is currently enrolled in Pacific Oaks College
Human Development program and in the Yoga Philosophy program
at Loyola Marymount University, where she has also studied
the art of teaching Yoga to children with K. Desikachar. She
is a certified Yoga Ed instructor. Over the years she has been
teaching arts to children, and is now focused solely on Yoga
for children and teens in the public and private school systems
and yoga studios including Silverlake Yoga, The Walther School,
Wildwood School, Crossroads, New Roads, Liberation Yoga and
Mission Street Yoga. Through the encouragement of her teachers,
Abby developed a teacher’s training course for teaching
kids which she has led at YogaWorks and City Yoga. Abby
is the kids Yoga teacher for Sportskool, a vod network based
on the east coast, for which she has hosted and instructed
three kids Yoga shows. She is the author of a kids
Yoga story book still seeking a home. In her free time, Abby
loves
being surrounded by lush natural environments with her husband
and dog, meditation, cooking, making mixes on itunes, dancing
and chanting with her beloved community of friends.
Abby believes that Yoga for young ones is about encouraging
them to listen to their own truth, thereby allowing
them to live genuinely and to ‘be themselves.’ Her
classes foster community, sharing, trust, and healthy
living. Inspiring teachers along the path include: my MA, Tsoknyi
Rinpoche, Pema Chodron, Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche, Ammachi, Gurmukh,
Osher Levi, Humanity at Peace, Mela Butcher, Patrice Pujol,
Jaquee Abadie, Chandra, Steven Freedman, Swami Sivananda,
Vida Vierra, Chuck Miller, Maty Ezraty, Kari Parsons, and
all of the kiddos!
